I start all of my plants from seed in my indoor greenhouse. This is a cross-bred hibiscus plant so there is no way of knowing what the flower will look like but the pictures posted are examples of what you might expect. Most hibiscus plants will flower the first season if grown under optimal conditions. Please note that this is a tropical plant and MUST BE kept above 50 degrees F. at all times. This plant can be over-wintered indoors in areas where temperatures fall below 50 degrees F.
This hibiscus starter plant ships in a 3.5" pot. A hibiscus in a 3.5" pot most likely does not need to be up-potted for at least one season. In fact, a root bound hibiscus is more likely to produce flowers. Because this was grown indoors in a controlled environment it is shipped 100% free from pests but we are not responsible for anything past the shipping point. Always inspect your plants daily as once it's outdoors it will be susceptible to pests.

1 - READ BEFORE BRINGING OUTSIDE
Because your plant has never been in the sun, it is very important to acclimate your plant to the outdoor environment. This is called "hardening off". The process should take 1-2 weeks. After opening your box, place your plant outdoors in a partially shaded area for just an hour or two for the first few days. Slowly bring it out of the shade and leave it outside for a few hours longer each day for about 2 weeks until you can leave it in full sun all day long.
2 - WATERING
Water your plant when soil becomes dry. You can test this by simply lifting up the plant and if there's little to no weight, it needs water. You can also test by sticking your finger in the soil about 2". If it feels dry, then water. Your plant will most likely need water every single day so pay attention to your plant. Drooping leaves almost always mean your plant needs water, but be careful as drooping leaves may also be an indication of over-watering. Check your soil for moisture before watering always.
3 - FERTILIZING
Your plant comes pre-fertilized so you will not need to fertilize your plant for at least 14 days. I use Jack's 20-20-20 all-purpose fertilizer and Epsom salt. Mix 1 tablespoon of fertilizer and 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt to 1 gallon of water. Mix well and water the plant with your fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. When your plant starts to show flower buds you can add Jack's blossom booster to your mix at a rate of 1 tablespoon per gallon.
4 - PEST CONTROL
Hibiscus plants may attract unwanted pests such as aphids, spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, and scale mites. It is important to inspect your plants as often as possible as an infestation can happen if left untreated. There are all-natural, organic methods of pest control as well as chemical systemics and sprays. Please do your research as we are not responsible for any pests from your outdoor environment.
5 - UP-POTTING
Your plant is in a 3.5" pot and should get you through an entire growing season. However, if you need to up-pot only go slightly larger like a 1/2 gallon or 1 gallon pot (6-8" pot). Make sure to use a well-draining potting mix. What I use is Pro-Mix potting mix and amend with added perlite and peat moss. This creates a very loose, well-draining soil, perfect for Hibiscus plants.
